Alan Buckley (born 23 October 1941 in Ardwick, Manchester[1] – died 12 March 2008 (aged 66) in Walkden, near Manchester)[2] was an English rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s, '60s and '70s who at club level played rugby union for Broughton Park F.C., and at representative level played rugby league for Great Britain, and England, and at club level for Swinton, playing mostly at Left Centre, i.e. number 4. Buckley joined "the Lions" from Broughton Park F.C. near the end of the 1950s and was virtually an overnight sensation at Station Road tearing through opposition defences with his blistering pace and determined running.
Buckley won a cap for England while at Swinton in 1968 against Wales (sub), and won caps for Great Britain while at Swinton in 1963 against Australia, in 1964 against France, in 1965 against New Zealand, and in 1966 against France, Australia (2 matches), and New Zealand.[3] Alan was one of the 4 Swinton players on the 1966 tour of Australasia along with Ken Gowers, John Stopford and Dave Robinson.
